Why I Started a Blog as an ‘Old’ Woman—And Why You Should Too

Retirement is often seen as a time to slow down, but for me, it became a time to truly live. After decades of being a serious, suit-wearing attorney, I found myself in a strange new world—one where I didn’t have to bill hours or draft legal briefs. What was I supposed to do with all…

Why did I decide to start a blog? Because life doesn’t stop being interesting just because you’ve hit a “certain age.” In fact, this stage of life is the perfect time to reflect, share, and connect. So, here’s why I started this blog—and why you might want to start one too.

A Legacy for My Family (or a Way to Prove I Was Cool Once)

We spend our lives working, raising families, and collecting memories, but how often do we actually write them down? One day, my daughter might want to know what I was really like—beyond just being “Mom.” A blog gives me a space to document my adventures, my misadventures, and all the lessons in between. Who knows, maybe one day my great-grandkids will read this and think, “Wow, Grandma was kind of awesome.”

Sharing Tips, Tricks, and Travel Mishaps

After traveling the world and embracing retirement, I’ve learned a thing or two—like how to pack for a month in a carry-on (still a work in progress) and how to find the best bakery in any city (now that, I’ve mastered). A blog is my way of sharing all the things I wish someone had told me: how to thrive financially in retirement, how to stay adventurous, and how to never stop reinventing yourself. Also, if I can save you from booking a “quaint” hotel that turns out to be a closet, I’ll consider that a win.

Finding ‘My People’

Here’s something no one tells you—retirement can be a little lonely at times. After years of workplace friendships and daily routines, the sudden quiet can be a shock. But blogging has connected me with amazing, like-minded people who love exploring, learning, and living life fully at every age. Who knew that sharing a story about getting lost in Morocco could lead to friendships across the globe?

Why You Should Start Your Own Blog

If you’ve ever thought, “I have stories to tell” or “I want to share what I’ve learned,” then why not start a blog? You don’t need to be tech-savvy, and trust me, no one cares if you make typos (I sure don’t). Whether you write about travel, finances, grandkids, or the best way to make a martini, blogging is a fantastic way to connect, create, and leave your mark.

Embrace This Chapter—And Have Fun With It

Retirement isn’t the end of the story—it’s the best part of the book. Starting this blog has given me a creative outlet, a sense of purpose, and a way to (hopefully) inspire others. If you’ve ever thought about putting your thoughts into words, now’s the time.

So, tell me—if you were to start a blog, what would you write about? And more importantly, what’s stopping you?
